The advantages and disadvantages of SEO?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of SEO? To first understand the pros and cons, you must first have a firm grasp on what SEO is and how SEO helps in business or website. Even if you don’t decide to focus your marketing strategies on SEO right now, understanding how SEO works, the importance of SEO and the benefits of SEO optimization will likely be something you will eventually need to know.
So what is SEO? SEO is a common acronym for “search engine optimization“, and it is important to get to know about it if you run a business or manage a website. It helps your website get recognized and show up sooner in search engine results for predetermined keywords.
There are many different aspects of good SEO, but mainly it focuses on using targeted keywords in your website, articles, and social media posts to show Google or other search engines that your business is a good match for various searches users may perform.
Other aspects like having a fast and user-friendly website, using alternate text for images on your website, and having good readability for your articles will also allow search engines to scroll through your pages easier and will make them more likely to recommend your website to users.
Having a high ranking position on a search engine has some obvious benefits for your business, like more contact with potential clients and higher visibility. There are some disadvantages of SEO as well. While there are some SEO limitations, educating yourself about the kinds of SEO, what will work best for your business, and how to employ these tactics will enable you to navigate through the waters of online marketing with greater ease.
What we will cover in this article
Advantages of SEO
The first thing you need to understand is how important SEO can be for your business and what benefits to your business you can expect to reap. There are many different advantages depending on which kind of SEO you use and how well you implement it. Whether or not you decide to use SEO as your main form of marketing will depend entirely on the age of your business, the niche of your business, and your marketing budget, but you cannot make an educated decision until you have all the facts.
Better User Experience
You want to attract people to your website, but the kinds of people you attract are more important than the sheer volume. You can draw loads of people to your website, but if they are not in your target demographic, then it doesn’t do you any good. It is vital to ensure that the potential clients that come to your website are likely to become customers.
When you employ SEO tactics, you choose keywords that are likely to be searched for by potential customers in your target demographic. When you use SEO tactics, your business stays on brand and communicates with people who are already looking for what you are selling. Instead of interrupting a user’s time with advertisements, you are helping them solve a problem. This gives your users the best and most relevant experience to their search and will generate more positive business for you.
Primary Source of Leads
Investing in an SEO marketing strategy is one of the smartest uses of your marketing budget. There are no “peak times” during the year to use SEO, and it is not a seasonal advertising tactic. It will keep working all day and all year with very little management or input on your part. It is a very low maintenance form of marketing.
It also has a very high rate of return on investment. Because it is used to get your business into the view of people who are already searching for solutions you can provide, there is a much higher chance that they will become a customer than a random advertisement. Your ideal customer comes to you instead of you having to sort through endless potential customers to find the golden client.
Building Brand Credibility
Everyone knows that people do not go past page one of the search engine results when looking for a solution to their problems. If they cannot find the answer on page one, then they search for something new. This, in part, is a matter of convenience, but it is also tied to credibility.
Showing up as a result on the first page of search engine results sets your business up to be an authority in your field. It gives you a marked advantage over your competitors that do not rank as high on search engines. It sets your business up as an established business that has been around for a long time that people can trust.
Establishing Brand Awareness
Using proper SEO tactics helps you to establish your brand as an authority. It also allows you to be noticed and easily recognized by a much wider audience. Establishing this level of brand awareness means a lot more traffic to your website and more friend referrals from current customers. If you couple this with social media marketing strategies, you can be periodically put in front of your target demographic when they are online.
The more people are able to see your business, the easier they are able to recognize it above the competition. Even if someone doesn’t need your services right now, you want your business to come to their mind if they need them in the future. Establishing this brand awareness is what makes you stand out from the competition and brings you more organic visits to your website or business.
Building Trust
Whether it is a conscious decision or an unconscious one, people trust the search engine results. They trust the ability of the search engine to give them the most pertinent matches to their search on the first page. Because of this, search engines like Google basically refer businesses to customers.
Because Google is seen as an authority in recommending businesses, you want to be one of the businesses that Google refers to your demographic. Showing up in the first page in a user’s search results will be seen as a friend recommending your business to the person performing the search. This gives you an added measure of trust with a potential client.
Long-Term Marketing Strategy
One crucial thing to note is that SEO is not a short-term solution to our marketing strategy. SEO is designed to be used as a long-term solution for a viable and profitable method of growth. Because it is a long-term solution, it has more lasting results than any shorter and quicker marketing strategies.
Short term solutions like pay per click advertising (PPC) may give you a quicker result, but you will have to put in added work and money to get those results. There are many advantages and disadvantages of PPC as well, but investing lower amounts of money and less effort and waiting and using SEO strategies will give you a better return on your investment.
Disadvantages of SEO
There is no perfect, one-size marketing strategy that is always going to yield the best results as fast as you want them to – everything has its disadvantages. It was mentioned before but bears repeating, that in order to make an informed decision, you need to have all the information. This definitely includes the disadvantages to any course of action. You want to enter into a strategy with your eyes wide open, so you are not disappointed by any surprises down the road. Now that you know the advantages of SEO marketing, it is time to weigh those against the disadvantages.
Some Low-Quality Leads
This method does cast a wider net than some other forms of marketing, which means you may get some lower quality leads. This can waste a little bit of your time. Since you do not have control over who contacts you, you have to sort through the leads to determine which ones are viable.
There is some degree of user error that is also possible with this kind of marketing. Since you determine which keywords to use, there is always the possibility that they are not optimal for your needs. If you use less than optimal keywords and phrases, you can miss out on finding the right people, and you could even end up with a lot of unwanted visitors that don’t turn into customers.
Growing Pains
Using SEO marketing could lead to your business growing very quickly. While this would usually be seen as a good thing, expansion takes planning and funding, and too much fast growth can actually hurt your business.
Too many clients before you have had time to adjust can lead to a decline in the quality of your work and unhappy customers. This bad exposure can stay with your business for a long time. It will put an enormous burden on you as you try to keep up with the extra orders and expand your business at the same time. Unlike PPC and other forms of marketing, the leads will not stop flowing in.
In Someone Else’s Hands
When you use SEO marketing, you are also a little bit at the mercy of Google and its algorithm. If you don’t do your SEO right, Google is not going to fix it. Since it is managed by an algorithm on a computer, there is no allowance for user error. This can mean penalties or other negative consequences if you are not doing everything just right.
Since your business is important to you, you shouldn’t place all the success in one person’s hands. In other words, you should diversify your marketing strategy and not rely on one source for all your leads. If you are using multiple ways to drive business to you, then you won’t have as big of a problem if there are technical errors or other issues with one of the sources. You don’t want your business to halt because your main source of marketing is on the fritz.
Long-term Results
Another issue that you might have if you use SEO marketing strategies is that you will not likely see results for 3-12 months after starting this method. This can be a long time, especially for a business that is just starting. You will need to ask yourself if you can afford to wait that long while you wait to see results. If you have a brand-new or untested product, then this is probably not the right strategy for your business right now.
How Do the Advantages and Disadvantages of SEO Measure Up?
As you can see, no one method for marketing is devoid of any negative aspects. There are many pros and cons to SEO marketing, but overall, there are more advantages than disadvantages to using SEO marketing for your business.
While this means that it is a good strategy for most businesses to use, you need to be fully cognizant of all the advantages and disadvantages of using SEO before you can choose if it is a good option for you. Even if it is not a good fit right now, it will likely be down the road, so understanding it now will help you implement it later.
If you do decide to move forward with SEO marketing, then you will need to decide if you are going to do it yourself or if you are going to pay someone else to do it. This also has pros and cons. Implementing it yourself will save you some money, but it will take you more time, and you may not see the full benefits of this method since you lack experience.
Paying someone else to set up your SEO marketing for you will cost more, but it may be worth it to have someone with experience manage the strategy for you. You will likely see a greater return on your investment because you will end up on page 1 of search engine results much faster with the right keywords. This kind of exposure will likely far outweigh the amount of money you pay for done for your SEO.
