Google Update: Page Experience Ranking for Desktop

Google has begun rolling out the page experience update which they say will be complete by the end of March 2022.

The rollout started at the beginning of February 2022 and Google has already started using page experience as part of their ranking factors.

This update will be similar to the Core Web Vitals update we saw back in June/July except that update was focused on mobile and this update is focused on desktop.

Therefore, the three Core Web Vitals metrics will now apply to desktop too.

Here’s what you need to ensure your desktop site is ready for:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)
  • First Input Delay (FID)
  • HTTPS Security
  • Absence of intrusive interstitials

How can you prepare?

The first thing you need to do is run your site through PageSpeed Insights. This will be able to give you a Core Web Vitals score for both mobile and desktop.

Next, you need to make your site secure (if it’s not already). Getting an SSL/TSL certificate for your site is easy. You can set this up through your hosting or through something like Cloudflare.

Lastly, you need to ensure you do not have any intrusive interstitials such as pop-ups, banners or overlays that appear on screen promoting services and getting in the way of the user’s motive of reading your site’s content.

How important is this update?

Much like the first Core Web Vitals update, I think there will be more hype than there needs to be over it. Yes, it is very important as what’s more important than providing your visitors with a good user experience? Will your rankings tank though? It’s unlikely. Your website is only relative to the other websites you’re competing against in your industry. If your industry has a low standard of websites, the need for your website to be exceptional is not essential. However, you should always strive for exceptional anyway!
